To coordinate this sharing time, the three high school instructional technology coaches organized a “speed dating” event. In January, all high school teachers were asked to create an engagement commitment for second semester.

Imagine having one-on-one access to multiple representatives of federal agencies, all of whom have resources available to help address rural health care and social issues. That dream came true for the people who attended the UND Discovery grand challenge event earlier this week. Representatives from eight federal agencies came to campus at their own expense to discuss grant and research opportunities and to solicit proposals for some programs. The University has the capacity to help solve rural issues, said Thomasine Heitkamp, who with grand challenge team members invited the federal representatives.
She noted that the event was held during National Rural Health Week. A panel discussion at the event allowed participants to learn more about submitting proposals for research that might address rural health and other social issues. Equally rare was hearing directly how agencies help rural communities and the types of research and education they help fund. A panel discussion allowed participants to learn even more about submitting proposals.
About people attended the UND Discovery grand challenge event, held earlier this week at the Gorecki Alumni Center, including representatives from eight federal agencies. Four other representatives, some of them UND alumni, discussed their programs and how researchers could help them fulfill their missions. Not here. We immediately started implementing our plan. There are five grand challenges within that goal, he added, and one of them is to meet the health and social challenges of rural communities.

At the start of a speed dating session, students are given a topic or question to discuss. Each student sits facing another student. Students typically remain in their partner-groups for about minutes before the instructor, who must keep time, notifies them to move on to their next partner. Once students rotate to their new partners, the timer is reset and students again discuss their topic or question, this time with a new discussion partner.
The session proceeds in this manner, with each student thus getting the opportunity to interact with multiple other students in a series of brief one-on-one discussions Murphy, Depending on the goals of the session, the instructor may prepare just a few broad questions for students to discuss Murphy,

Using a Speed Dating Protocol to Think Critically about Writing
Cambridge scientists have come up with a new way of facilitating collaborations between academics at conferences — by treating them like genes. When they were funded by the Royal Society to run a small satellite conference on cell polarity, the researchers were determined to break the ice between scientists who did not know each other, and to encourage the big names to mix with the up and coming. The forty delegates were asked to submit information in advance both about their own research interests and about the specialist areas that they wanted to know more about.
The results of this pilot project have just been published in the open-access journal eLife. The team now hopes to fine tune its approach by trying it out at conferences of different sizes and in other disciplines.
To access hundreds of premium or staff resources, log in or sign up for an account. They spend ten minutes in pairs, offering each other specific feedback on a high-stakes writing assignment, before moving on to another partner for another round of critique. Actually two student exemplars. I want you to go back to the two articles and I want you to evaluate them based on the content and development criteria.
It has quotes. Each round lasted approximately 13 minutes and focused on one specific category of the writing rubric. I give the student pairs three to five minutes to read the work of their peers. Then they have five minutes to give critical feedback. Like some people only see grammar mistakes, some people only see spelling mistakes and there are some people who look for like the deep down things like you need more quotes or you need more information. This is what speed dating really allows them to practice.
I want them to know that professional journalists actually revise.

Weinberg and Moussawi collaborated with the other faculty members teaching the capstone Information Systems project course to explore how students could give and receive higher quality peer feedback on team presentations. They compared two different presentation approaches. Next, teams changed pairings, and the process repeated. Students completed brief surveys after each project-sharing session, and a sampling of sessions was observed by a trained researcher.

The speed-dating format is designed to help students spot comparisons and contrasts between different ideas, answers or categories of information. By enabling students to consider or research one area in depth, and then exchange their knowledge against the clock with classmates, it is an efficient means of sharing ideas and knowledge.
It works particularly well for topics where there are lots of key personalities to learn about: for example, in History this could involve a comparison of Roman Emperors, or the attitude of different types of people towards Hitler in Nazi Germany in. Each student has a short amount of time to formulate their response to the question, and then students are paired up to exchange their ideas. Each student then adjusts their original answer to accommodate any fresh ideas from the discussion, then moves to a fresh partner.
This process can be repeated over several rounds, and then a fresh question can be posed once all perspectives on the first one appear to have been absorbed. In this second round, the question can be considered in pairs before all students then move to a fresh partner for the first round of the new speed-dating activity.

This lesson is an individual assignment on the first day unless the teacher has so many students that they opt to have multiple students play a single character and a group activity on the second day. The teacher has some leeway as to whether they want to provide certain primary and secondary sources or whether they want to treat it as more of a research assignment, where students can search for their own information.
Students tend to learn facts about different presidents but sometimes they have trouble relating presidents to one another and making connections over time. R eference services, whether face-to-face or virtual, have been and remain a core library service. The importance of reference services is reflected in the library and information science LIS curriculum, but it is often overlooked in continuing education opportunities for librarians. For many working librarians, this can feel rote and ineffectual. After all, they already learned this in school. Experienced librarians may also feel that the reference interview is old hat, while newer librarians would benefit more from real-world practice than a repeat of their reference class.
In this speed dating-inspired workshop, we concentrated on approachability at the reference desk rather than accuracy to help reference providers fall in love with reference all over again.

In Effective Teaching Strategies. January 20, Jacqueline S. Hodes EdD. The panel discussion is a valuable, time-tested teaching technique used in classrooms of all types to help students understand the experiences of a particular group of people. My previous experiences facilitating successful panel discussions led me to believe that a panel would be a good method to use here.
It was not. In an effort to create a panel that represented a diversity of functions and practitioners, I ended up with too many panelists and, consequently, an ineffective exercise. As the instructor and panel moderator, one has to manage the questions from the class as well as rein in the excitement and enthusiasm of the panel participants to impart their wisdom.

Because connecting is so important to the creation of the dialogic classroom, students need to get to know one another. But sometimes the class is just too big and the time too short to ask a meaningful question all the way around the room. Instead, make space for a few people to connect in a short amount of time and people will come away with a larger network, a sense that they are more deeply known, and a new curiosity about others.
